The Department of Diving, Hyperbaric and Aerospace Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital has been providing hyperbaric oxygen treatment to the Tasmanian population for over 50 years. Conditions treated include decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, gas gangrene, necrotising fasciitis, diabetic ulceration, osteoradionecrosis, and soft tissue radiation injury. The department provides over 2,000 hyperbaric treatments annually in a combination of monoplace and multiplace chambers and provides 24/7 emergency support to Tasmania’s extensive recreational and occupational diving communities. The department also provides operational oversight and support to Australia’s Antarctic diving program through the Centre for Antarctic, Remote and Maritime Medicine (CARMM). In addition to these traditional functions, the newly refurbished facility at RHH also operates the Southern Hemisphere’s only dual-function hyper-/hypo-baric chamber and has an active aerospace medicine research and education program.
The tour will be hosted by the Head of Department, A/Prof. David Cooper.
